Hey guys, can you please help me with this question?

A mild steel shaft with UTS: 550 MPa and Yield Strength: 250 Mpa is used to carry power 126 kW in 226rpm. shaft length 300mm. There are 2 pulleys with loads 1000N and are separated each 100mm from outer side of shaft. Find the diameter of shaft with static load

      Thanks!

      1. Draw Free Body Diagram.
      2. Draw Bending Moment Diagram.
      3. Locate critical sections where moments are maximum.
4.Calculate stresses at critical sections. Include both bending and torsion stresses as appropriate.
5.Choose Failure mode theory appropriate for your material.
      6. Choose appropriate factor of safety.
      7. Size shaft.

Details are left to the student.

As length of shaft 300mm so bending has a least effect on shaft so can check the shaft for torque transmission
It will 95mm of diameter with FOS 4
