There are two reasons for having insurance: 1. My 3 largest clients all asked for my insurance details before they would even ask me to quote for the work. 2. Insurance is also to protect yourself if something goes wrong.
3. you're never safe from a jealous employee with seek mind and unbelievable imagination to hurt your image. A good insurance is something you would be happy to have especially dealing with very expensive facilities. Although I still rely even more in my own upgraded methods of risk analysis that any insurance company ;-)
I started in 2004/2005 when I got my PE license. I started my business basically from scratch with about 12 years of corporate engineering under my belt. My clients come primarily from past business relationships and contacts made through professional societies. Are you in the US? If so, be aware of state laws governing the practice of engineering as an independent with or without a PE license.
Yes, registering a business is easy but if you do not have clientele it might be difficult making money, so be prepared on having some funds available for those downtimes. Moreover, at the end of the day clients bring in money for knowledge.
I don't know much. But I think THE best way to this is using social media. Try LinkedIn and participate in discussion etc. It's a great way of building contacts
