Hi there, I was wondering if you guys would know if elliptical eye bolts were available on the market. The application I'm using this for requires me to place a shank hook through the eye bolt. The typical eye bolt becomes too large if i were to increase the size of the eye bolt to accommodate for shank hook. Are there any alternatives that you guys could recommend? Thanks!
Sorry, i realize i didn't proof read =P, the reason why i cannot use a regular eye bolt is because the typical eye bolt, that fits the shank hook, is too large and would make the overall length too big. eg:
Ok, now i see! Thanks a lot! Are you sure that what you have designed is compliant with the standard codes (for example ISO 3266)? I've never seen an eye bolt like this. If you'll make the eye with an elliptical shape the stress intensity factor increase greatly. The best shape is the circle. If you want to reduce the total length of your joint you need to re-design the hook and not the bolt. ATTENTION: this is only my personal opinion.
That's good to hear, at least that knocks out one of the alternatives. I will be redesigning the hook side. Thanks!
Yes , we could, but the reason why we chose to do this is because we wanted the shackle to center itself when a tensile load was applied.
I can think of a couple other means, Ron: A small spool or a pair of spacers could be used to ensure proper centering, or a different kind of eye bolt assembly could be used such as a Crosby swivel hoist ring, which is elongated, and swivels in two planes. Crosby also sells eye nuts if access from the far side is possible (a through bolt or stud would be used), and the eye nuts are elongated. You have not mentioned the hoisting load or details of the application - a lug with a shackle works well if a sling is used, and different types of shackles may accommodate a pretty narrow eye bolt and still center well. In Canada, Crosby sells a wide range of hoisting equipment that will be suitable, and provide good information. They also have offices in the US and England.
