Hi I am at a bit of a cross road in my career. I graduated in mechanical engineering about 15 years ago in the UK and have had a few different mechanical design roles in different industries - medical and building services have been my longest standing roles. I believe I have gone as far as I can in my current role so I have started looking for other roles. I have always had a passion for cars and while I have been looking for jobs the ones that have caught my eye are the automotive ones. I have now applied for a few however the response I have got is generally “we are not considering candidates without automotive expertise”. I have switched industries in the past without any issue, really just carrying across all of my mechanical design skills. I was just wondering if any body had switched into the automotive industry later in their career (not taken a graduate automotive engineer job). Or is this an impossible move? Ideally I am looking to go into powertrain design.
