      Hi,

My name's Peter and I talk to my computer.

Its just when you've been looking at the same CAD program for a long time, and it's not quite doing what you want it to do... I find my self talking through what my hands are doing on the keyboard and mouse, and complaining to the screen when a feature fails for the umpteenth time...

Now i'm starting to get funny looks from other people in the office who apparently don't talk quite so openly and frankly to their computer.

C'mon people, surely it can't just be me!!?

I often talk to my computer, but it's usually foul language! Maybe you are nurturing your PC by talking to it nicely!

Hehe - well you are definately not alone :)
(wisper: I even say bad words to my PC sometimes ;))

In fact I read somewhere that people tend to apply human features to inanimate objects, especially if there is close interaction involved (read: computers). Also that people tend to "trust" PCs that they've "known" for longer (for instance, to send some private information most people would pick the PC that they used before instead of the "strange" one). This happens on the subconscious level - after all, we are just human.

So keep talking my friend - that's pretty normal!

An extreme example could be Tom Hanks' pal in Cast Away, Wilson!

You just talk to your computer and people look at you weirdly? Oh come on, me and my computer have conversations, we have fights, we watch movies together and also we eat dinner together everyday. It can be a nuisance sometimes, sometimes it can be very moody and sometimes it really just doesn’t want to work. But it is a good computer, we spend a lot of time together.

Honestly, I cant relate less with this. In time I have realized windows is just bad for a developer. Its either MacOS or Linux that would make a developers life easier. MacOS if you are rich programmer and Linux based system is you are poor. Windows just does not have anything at all. Its all about how well advertised windows is otherwise I don’t think anyone would buy windows. It lags, it doesn’t have any packages that many developers need to use. Everything costs money and also is so heavy for the computers. I would prefer any Linux based system over windows any day of my life.

Please don't misinterpret my previous post. It was meant to be a funny paradigm for people who talk to their computers. As for the OSes, I am a Linux user and advocate myself, but I also use the other two systems as well. Each has its purpose for me.

I've never made the jump to Linux but I hear it's pretty well-supported these days.

On the other note - I also talk to my computer but it's mostly swearing.

I also work from home on my own so do sometimes find myself actually talking to myself. Thinking about old things that happened to me and sometime explaining them out loud, as if someone was there. Kind of weird I suppose.
If my computer is tapped by the NSA then they must have some really weird dirt on me!
