According to the BBC, we mechanical engineers earn 34% more than we did 30 years ago. We haven't done anywhere near as well as Medical practitioners (153%), but we're much better off than Fork lift truck drivers (-5%).
Whatever the deal is with earnings, we certainly ain't 34% better off than we were 30 years ago! Apologies for the misleading thread title.
The article in the link is from June 2011. I think the figures are pretty meaningless unless they're normalised against cost-of-living/inflation etc.
