I have recently come across some settlement money and wanted to pick the brightest brains on the best way to go about building my own desktop or laptop from complete scratch?? Such as technology (quantum, nano, etc.), conductors, material (3D, Kevlar, metal, etc.), and everything that goes into building these machines. Imagine if money was not a factor and you could buy anything. I'm just looking for ideas. Please help. Thank you.
What you want the computer to do dictates how you build it. If you're talking about building a computer from commercially available components (motherboard, power supply, drives, etc.) and a standard operating system then the gaming forums are probably the best source of information, a lot of them go to extreme lengths just because they can. Not just performance; many use technically unnecessary components and/or materials just for the "wow" factor. If you're talking about building it up from the semiconductor level, then you're talking about a whole new architecture where anything goes. The operating system may be custom written to be optimized for its intended application (NASA's supercomputers don't run Windows!) In that case it won't be a "desktop" or "laptop" computer in the usual sense even if it fits on a desk or lap.
