The word sled in this instance is not referring to the motor, but what it is moving. The sled is the carriage that moves the cd into the cd player. If you want to build a plotter the you would be looking for a stepper motor, or for more advanced control a servo motor. You can get CNC kits on eBay containing stepper motors and all associated control gear from china. I would suggest this is the shortest learning curve to building an xyz platform.
